Why your timer is probably violating Winchester's watering rules
Winchester recommends outdoor watering only on Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday, before 9 AM and after 7 PM. Here's the math that gets people: a 7:00 AM start across 8 zones at 12 minutes per zone means zone 5 starts right around 8:00 AM and zone 8 finishes just past 9:00 AM. That last zone runs into the restricted window every watering day, all summer.

Head uphill toward the Middlesex Fells, the higher streets near Cross Street and Ridge Street, and within a half mile you're hitting heavier clay and glacial till. Same county, same town, completely different drainage. Water sits on clay. It pools. It runs off before it penetrates. A system designed for clay runs longer cycles with more soak time, 12–15 minutes per zone with a pause between cycles so the water can actually absorb.
Two Winchester neighbours can have the same system, same brand, same install year, and one is overwatering while the other is underwatering. What happens during installation
Every Winchester install follows the same sequence:
Day 1: Design and trenching. We mark the layout based on the soil samples and your lot's specific shape. Then we trench the mainline and lateral lines. In sandy loam near the lakes, this goes fast. The soil is cooperative. In clay near the Fells, it goes slower. We bring a rock saw for the till. (We've broken two rock saws on similar Middlesex County soil. Both times we finished the job. One time the apprentice was not thrilled.)
Day 1 or 2: Heads, valves, and wiring. We install the sprinkler heads, valve manifolds, and run the wire from each valve back to the controller location. Most Winchester homes have the controller in the garage or basement. The wire runs underground alongside the lateral lines.
Day 1 or 2: Controller, backflow, and testing. If your lawn is under 3,000 square feet, a hose-end oscillating sprinkler and a $25 timer might be the honest answer. We'd rather tell you that than install a $3,000 system on a yard the size of a tennis court.
And if you're not going to winterize the system every fall, don't install one. A blown backflow preventer from one Massachusetts winter costs $400–$800 to replace. The winterization that prevents it costs $100–$150. The math isn't close.
